Mail File Slow to Open

We upgraded a group of users over the weekend from 6.0.1 to 6.5. Now some clients (haven’t found a common thread) are experiening extremely slow opening of their mail files. They can open any other database on the server without difficulty, but when they open the mail file, it takes 5 - 10 minutes. We put a sniffer on the connection and saw that the server pushed over about 32 MB of data and the client sent a bunch of acks. There is a local replica of the mail file; however, it is fully replicated. Cannot see anything that appears to be replicating or transferring at start up.

Thanks so much for the quick responses. I will try both suggestions and update the post.

I had something similar happen to a couple of my users as well. The common thread that I had found was that the user names had been modified for various reasons in the past (i.e.: marraige, typo in original name entry, etc…). I got the following solution from PassPort support:

Using the Domino Administrator program, right-click on the user’s mail file and select “sign”. Choose to use the “active server’s ID” to sign “all design documents”, leaving the “updating existing signatures” box blank. Click the “ok” button. After the job is done, open the mail file from the client’s PC. You will receive a security warning when opening the mail file. Choose to “start trusting the signer to execute the action”. The mail file may open slowly. After it’s open, close the Notes client again. Restart Notes and get back into the mail file. It should open normally now.

This problem drove me crazy for a month or so and it took Passport a while to come up with this fix, but it really works well. Try it out and see what you think.

Thanks, that works great here, too. I was having the same problem with my admin ID getting in to any mail file after I changed my name on that ID. Now I can get, at least, in to my mail file pretty quickly.

Subject: Mail File Slow to Open-but why?

I’ve had same problem with extremely slow opening mail DB (5-10 minutes) and your advice to sign mail DB again have fixed up all problems.

But I don’t understands what’s happened… I did only replace design of mail DB from StrR6Mail (mail6.ntf) to StdR7Mail (mail7.ntf) or Domino Web Access (7) (dwa7.ntf).

Can somebody tell me any explanation?

Subject: RE: Mail File Slow to Open-but why?

We have also seen the slow opening of mail files related to a user rename. What I remember was that it depended on the existence of one or more design elements with the old name. If such a design element exists (a folder or agent) then in the first period after the rename the client will be triggered to retrieve the complete design of the mailfile to the client to resign it in memory. So that can trigger a lot of traffic.

This was solved in one of the later 6.5.x releases as far as I know, but before that the work around was to resign all design elements.

Thank you Bill!

I had a customer with this exact same problem after a rename. Notes 7.0.2 on Xp and Domino 7.0.2 on AIX. User was renamed. This user has dozens of folders. Signed the db, restarted notes, trusted signer and voila, nice and speedy again. Thanks again!

It worked! Thanks.

The only items still listed with her old name were folders, of course the user had over 50 of them.

If the affected users have folder, try the ‘Upgrade Folder Design’ action.

my server performace degrades over a 2 week period. A reboot of the server cures this issue.

… a pain but it works.
