Mail.box corrupt & domino server suddenly-clossed

Hi All,

I am quite new handling domino server and I have two problem with my domino server that happen frequently.

First:

Frequently, my mail.box is corrupted, the message SMTP Server : Error opening mail box : Databasee is corrupt – cannot allocate space.

I can solve it with fixup. But a few day later, it will happen again and again. Anybody have experience with this ? And how to solve it ?

Second problem :

My domino server console is closed (/down) and dissappear by itself without any error message. just gone. I try to track the logs. But cannot find any clue that explain the cause of the sudden-closed server. This also so often happening. Very annoyed.

Anybody have experience how to deal with this two things ? Any advice ?

I install on windows 2000 server, using console server (not windows service).

Corruption in your mail.box could be because the server is closing itself.

I had a similar problem with a backup program (server crashing and not logging information) one year ago.

I think you first have to detect what is the cause of your problem because you have no clue, I recommend you:

  1. Shut down your server

  2. Delete the server mailboxes (any mail inside will be lost), don’t fix it any more, when the server start up, it will create again new and empty mailboxes.

  3. Try to isolate the Domino server, disabling any O.S. program like backup software, antivirus or any in-memory software.

  4. Start up your server and wait for results.

Of course, I’m assuming that your O.S. doesn’t have any problem and it is updated, your Domino server doesn’t report any other problem to the log.

It is a good practice to have scheduled fixup run on the mail boxes. This can be done during the non-productions hours.

You have to create a program document to shut down the router task (also stop SMTP task if it is running) and then run a fixup on the mail boxes.

We follow this procedure in our environment and seen excellent results with mail box performance.

Thank you very much for you all for the advice. all are great advice that i never think previously.

I will try this action for a couple of time, a week may be, in order I get confident result. I will post the result for anybody else who face same problem like me. Because I install also SMSDOM for domino to filter incoming/outgoing email. and also veritas backup which run every night.

The corrupt mail.box can be causing the server to crash.Shut down the domino server, rename the mail.box and start the server. The server will create a new mail.box. The mails in the old mail.box can be copied in the new mail.box, so you don’t have to lose any pending mails.

The real cause of the server crash can be found in the nsd-file of the crash (in the Data directory in the directory Lotus\Domino\Data\IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT by default).
