The Mail Inbox for ND8 has several cosmetic changes that many customers do not like at all.Changing the Unread from red to Bold-Black was a bad idea. There is too much black on white. It’s very annoying and more difficult to manage. Is there a template that makes the look and feel more like 6.5? Our CIO is talking about moving to Outlook. No Joke.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that having the 8.5 client running against the 8.5 server would allow the unread to be ‘red’ again, but I can’t find any documentation to that fact now.

Mary Beth, can you explain the rationale behind Lotus’ thinking to do away with ‘Red’ unread messages? That small but highly significant change garnered a great deal of outcry from our customers. I know it’s been a while, and most of them have accepted the change, but I still hear from a few every once in a while about it.
Subject: because Outlook has it?
Subject: there are several things you can do…
Hi,Are you using the actual Notes 8.o or 8.0.1 client?
If so, there is a way for you to change the color of unread messages to red. on a particular client by editing the css file in the file Notes.css
If you are using 802, it’s packaged in a jar file and thus not as editable.
In Notes 8.5 we revised the icons so that you can much more easily tell read/unread messages using the icons. We have had a great deal of positive comment about it.
In Notes 8.5.1 we’ll have a preference in “Fonts and colors” where each user can change unread messages to the color red.
Last, you can have this person use the “non-java” template – have them hold down the CtRL + ALT key at the same time and the old (non-java) version of the template will open. (this works in any of the versions).
Hope that helps. you don’t want him to go to Outlook because unread messages in Outlook are also black bold, so he still won’t be happy.

Subject: Look-and-feel controlled through style sheets
That is easily changeable by modifying the style sheet. See this for more info.http://www.alanlepofsky.net/alepofsky/alanblog.nsf/dx/notes-8-change-the-colour-of-unread-messages
Or see Niklas posting for a tool that can be used to do this.

Subject: Oh yeah, and unread marks in Outlook are bold black
Subject: that’s why that PHB comment was hilarious
Guess he’s never used Outlook much or just doesn’t remember, but once switched to Exchange, I’d bet he wouldn’t complain because he’s the one who pushed for the big change and he’d never blame himself ![]()
