Am I loosing it ? I thought the R6 upgrade path was to upgrade the admin server and NAB template and replicate it WW. To R5 servers and now Lotus support tell us this is incorrect ?
Is this true ? this is what they are telling us
Having a NAB using the release 6 template is not supported. Your R5 server
will try reading the new design properties of the ND6 NAB template and you
will start running into problems. Templates are backward compatible, but
not forward compatible. You can upgrade some servers to ND6 while still
having other servers in R5. The only thing you have to worry about, is to
ensure that you are not replicating the design of your ND6 databases to the
Subject: Lotus tell us that the R6 NAB Template is not supported on an R5 server ?
Hi
The R6 NAB Template is fully backward compatible with R5 Servers.
We have just spent the day with Lotus clarifying our upgrade plan, which we ‘copied’ from the Red Book, which goes as follows:
Upgrade NAB Template
Upgrade Admin Server Code
Upgrade Hub Server Code
Upgrade All Other Server Code
With there being several weeks/months between each stage.
The R6 NAB Template is backward compatible to R4.67. Also, assuming that your servers have at least designer access to the NAB, then design elements will be replicated.
Of course, it is possible that the Red Book, Lotus UK and our upgrade team have completely missed the point, but our belief is that there is no issues with running an R6 NAB on an R5 server.
Subject: RE: Lotus tell us that the R6 NAB Template is not supported on an R5 server ?
We’ve had no problems with running an R6 NAB on R5 servers and have been doing so for months. We’re a large enterprise with 50+ servers on W2k, NT, AIX and z/OS.
and for allaying my fears. This is the way that we have always done it, and what is in the Red Book and with the number of servers in our environoment, it is not feasible to have some on R5 design and some on R6. It would be a nightmare.

Sounds logical to me: how do you propose that Notes be “forward-compatible”? You upgrade your admin server, and can replicate your NAB as normal – this replication doesn’t extend to replicating the design for the reasons they list.
Subject: Clarification: The Domino 6 Directory template is fully backwards compatible
The Domino 6 Directory template is fully backwards compatible. It works with ALL domino versions prior to ND6.The only limitation is that in order to replicate properly, downlevel servers need to be R4.6x or higher. This is due to “large UNK tables” enabled in the Domino Directory as of version 6, which versions prior to R4.6x can’t correctly handle.
