Mr. Schwartz sure can talk some smack, can’t he? I love this line…
“First - we’re not waiting for 2005 to migrate all of Sun to a non-Microsoft desktop. By the end of this calendar year - potentially by summer - we’ll be there.”
Ummm… does someone need to inform him of the difference in desktop counts between Sun and IBM? And he goes on to list the great results of being off MS desktops – well friggin DUH!
So, if Mr. Schwartz is so on-the-ball that he thinks he needs to spell out the advantages to a Linux desktop to IBM (who is it funding the national TV ad spots for Linux now? Hmmmm…) and thinks that transitioning 300,000 machines should take as much time as transitioning 30,000 – he’s probably not a particularly reliable source for information about the future of Notes, is he?
Frankly, I think he’s just pissed because IBM has been getting Domino customers to move servers off Sun hardward and on to iSeries boxes.

My personaal opinion is that Solaris OS is best OS on the market now for variety of purposes ( I tried them all worth of trying ;-)) but if somethign better get on the market I will move forward. IBM has so many platforms now that people gets confused and to be honest I won’t be suprised that IBM put Notes as we know it today on ice and have Notes part of Websphere something. I just think that Solaris-Domino is best combination for Domino… That’s all and I am not interested in religious wars about Linux, Windows… The only thing I am looking for is lowest TCO of the system.

If you want to lower your TCO, by the way, it’s really not all that important what OS you run on. The cheapest OS/hardware combination is almost certainly Linux on the biggest Intel-based systems you can find (free OS, commodity hardware, fewest number of actual Domino server licenses.) But FAR more important than your hardware/license cost is your human cost. Fewer adminstrators supporting the system and less user downtime are the two key factors to minimizing TCO. Some people think cutting servers means cutting administrators, but you can also reduce administrative overhead by improving automation, which means using as much automatic monitoring & correction as possible. Minimizing user downtime means strong virus protection, minimizing spam, providing clustering failover, use of policies, and enterprise-wide version matching.

I am not trying to start the war. I am just looking for info. But as far as Sun hardware goes, for $2500 I get everything I need to run Domino for small shops 
with V2xx. to sart with … I am not in to “white box” stuff. WE use IBM as Intel platform and Sun as RISC. I do have over 150 installation (with about 100 users each) of Domino on Solaris and 2 guys to support it. Linux still has to a bit more to compere with AIX or Solaris :-)). And I run it at home (linux).

150 installations of 100 users supported by 2 guys? That smacks of outsourced data center. In which case, go with what you know, and Solaris is an obvious choice.
Then again, that should theoretically mean 150 Domino licenses at about $2000 each ($300K of Dom licenses alone annually), or about an additional $20/yr/user.
Buying Intel hardware from IBM probably doesn’t help too much, either. Dell and HP are far more aggressive on pricing, at least historically.
Anyway, at 150 servers, you might have some options on better ways to support that if you can get your Domino server license cost down. Might be worth the investment in a new platform.

at Lotusphere. You can start with http://www.bruceelgort.com.
The short version is: Notes and Domino are not going away at all. IBM has
committed to at least version 8, and described how they’re going to do
convergence between Notes and the forthcoming, cross-platform, Eclipse-based
“rich client.”

Actually, no… didn’t know they had a new CD. I never really got exposed to much of them besides Vegas (great disc!) so maybe I’ll go check it out.
