Hello all,
In our company, we have Lotus Notes installed on every workstation. At one department, people often have a problem where Notes suddenly decides to close itself, or close some opened e-mails. At this department, people receive very big e-mails, so I was thinking that this might have something to do with a memory restriction in Lotus Notes. Does anyone know if there is such a thing? And if there is, is there a way to disable or enlarge it?
Thanks in advance,
Jasper

Recommended system specs should be available via the 6.5 Deployment Redbook so you can look those up.
Is the problem repeatable?
You say the messages are ‘very big’. How big is big?
If it’s a problem related to large attachments, then Notes should shut down every time you try and open the message.
Can you move the message to another machine in a different department and still see the issue?
Is there anything non-standard about the machines in this department?
Any chance these systems have been infected with a virus?
Any chance the emails contain code and the users have set their ECLs to allow execution of malicious code?
HTH and keep us posted.
Doug

Hi Doug,
Thanks for your reply, and sorry for my late one.
First of all, the workstations are fairly new, the specs are not a problem at all. There also is nothing special to the machines in that apartment, and we scan our workstations for virusses very often (did it again yesterday to make sure), no virus found.
I will check the other issues today, and will post the results here. In the meantime I have something to add to the problem description:
The problem almost never occurs when opening one specific message. It always happens when multiple (large) e-mails are opened. That’s the reason I though about a memory problem in Lotus Notes.
However, I will check whether the problem is repeatable with a specific set of mails, and will check wheter this can also be done on other computers. Then I will report back in
Thanks for the help so far!

Ok so I checked with the department, this is the case:
The problem is not repeatable. Sometimes they can work with a lot of open mail just fine, another time Notes shuts itself down, or closes some e-mails when they open a lot of them.
The big mails I was talking about vary in size from 250,000 up to 700,000.
Attachments don’t seem to cause the problem, because sometimes the problems also occur with emails without attached files.
Last, I was thinking about the malicious code etc., but I’m pretty sure this is not the case because the mails come from trusted customers and some large global companies…
