I’ve been working on a way to setup lotus notes on a computer without user intervention. I have noticed that after running notes with an ini file that points to a config file with user parameters, notes will build a names.nsf file for the user in the location specified as the “Directory” in the notes.ini file. Is it possible to specify 2 different locations 1 for names.nsf, and other for Directory, directly so that notes will build a names.nsf file in a location different then then the one specified by the “Directory” in the notes.ini file.
The goal is for each user to have their own names.nsf & notes.ini file, but giving everyone their own personal “Directory” specified in notes.ini would take up far too much space as the directory folder is very large in size. So it would be nice to have a common Directory folder, and a personal folder for names.nsf and a notes.ini file (and possibly desktop and bookmarks file).
If you’re doing a multi-user setup choose “Install for everyone using this computer” during the setup of Notes. That will store the common Notes application files in a central location (something like C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lotus), but then when each user logs in and launches Notes it will create their own notes.ini, names.nsf and bookmarks.nsf.
Note that the “install for everyone” option is only available for the Notes client. You cannot use the installer that includes Designer or Administrator, you have to use the Notes client only installer.
However, this is sort of a patch up solution to add new users to the way its setup now. It would take far too long to reinstall multi-user version of notes on every workstation. However, this information might be very useful, for those that have a setup of multi-user notes, what does it list under the “Directory=” section, if this is the directory where the common files are stored then what is the location where the userspecific files listed as?
