We’ve got some hardware maintenance (hard drives, memory) to do on several servers which are currently at 7.03 and also 8-9 years old. I’ve been asked to look into the minimum hardware requirements needed to upgrade to 8.5.1 so that we can determine if our current servers are capable or if we should be budgeting for new server hardware.
The only information I’ve found from IBM indicated what I consider bare minimum (http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27016204) and I was wondering if those who are using it now can give a better idea of what is required.

Are you going to use the same functionality in Domino 8.5.1 that you use in 7.0.3 or are you going to take advantage of DAOS, transactional logging, iNotes, maybe sametime, traveler, etc.
Without knowing the number of (concurrent) users and your current hardware its hard to know but if you just want to upgrade to 8.5.1 and your hardware handles your users fine right now, I say you will be fine with R8 since it doesnt add much overhead. Actually I think it has better performance than R7.
Then again, if you are looking at traveler, Sametime, DAOS, and other things, you need to consider an upgrade.

iNotes - we already do
Sametime - runs on it’s own server, but they may want to take advantage of the unified messaging that it offers

My thought is that it could use a more powerful processor and more memory.
We have 6 remote servers that serve about 20 users on average, each. They are all single Xeon 2.4GHz processors with 1GB of memory. We’re looking at the 8.5 requirements because they are running very low on drive space (don’t ask) and since we’re investing about $4000 in drive space and memory, we thought we should look at the servers to see if it would be sufficient for an 8.5.1 server. We also have to upgrade the OS from Win2000 Server to one of the recommended OS’s.
The two hub servers are the same processor but have 4GB of memory each. The servers are IBM xseries 345 servers.
Does anyone know if Windows Server 2003 Standard edition non-R2 version is okay? The supported OS list in the link in my original post specifies R2.
