Log file managment

The Domino log file on our server increases very rapidly.Is it recommended to create full text indexing on the log file?

What is the best way to prevent the log file to reach to a large size?

Is there a recommended maximum size for the Domino log file?

You are right DomLog.nsf can become very large very fast. There are a number of things that you can do to help minimize the size. The first is to filter out various image types in the server document. Look in the server document under Internet Protocols/HTTP and find exclude from log. Under MIME Type you can enter images/jpgs or any other MIME type that you might want to filter out. This will have a significant impact on DomLog.nsf because each page that is hit probably loads several graphic images. Under the URL setting you might want to add something like mail/* to exclude all inotes hits, or exclude all hits to an other specific folder. You can filter any hits from your internal IP addresses under Hosts and Domains so enter 192.168.2.* or whatever else is appropriate. This kind of filtering serves two purposes, first it will speed up the HTTP task because when it finds a filter it does not need to do a write operation which is probably the slowest of all operations, second it eliminates a lot of transactions from DomLog.nsf keeping it smaller (not small).

In some of our testing we have found no performance difference between logging to text files and DomLog.nsf if DomLog can be kept under control.

Second adding a FT Index to DomLog would not be a good idea as it takes a fair bit of resources to amintain a FTI.

The problem is that the Domino URL is very efficient for the server to process because it generally includes the Document ID/View ID and in many cases the Database ID. This is really nice for the server but almost impossible for a human to decypher. Workflo Systems has developed Workflo!Log Analyzer that takes all of that really ugly URL and turns it into useable and human readable documents. In addition you can perform additional filtering on DomLog hit to exclude or include only hits in a specific Db that use a specific form. The Log Analyzer is 100% Notes/Domino and designed exclusively to work with the Domino Server. Once a hit is processed by the Log Analyzer it is no longer needed by DomLog so what we recommend is to set the Space Saver settings on DomLog to something like 7 days which makes it very managable.

You can download a free full function demo from our site at HTTP://www.wfs.com which will process the first 30 days hits in your DomLog. Read the Help DB that comes with it :slight_smile:

I have see a log file of 1 gig with no perfromance problems on a server.

Do not full-text index the log file. It changes all the time and only has 7 days worth of data by default. This will slow down the server if you full-text index the log.nsf

You can change the amount of data stored in the log.nsf by changing the notes.ini line that reads

LOG=log.nsf,1,0,7,40000

Check out this link for an explination of the variables.
