Local Agent

I created a database that was replicated every 10 mins to all our Lotus Notes users. Thsi database has a schedule agent set to run on Local.

I works fine on my workstation but not on other workstations. After hours of investigation, I found out that the value of RUN ON is my Abbreviated name and not Local. So I changed 1 of the users’s agent to RUN ON local. The agent works on that PC after I replicated the database to server. I thought I solved the problem…Now my PC does not run the agent…I found out the agent is set RUN ON from the user that I have changed…

Is there a way that the agent settings RUN ON to be fixed to local? On my template, I specifically chosen RUN ON Local. The database on server has RUN ON Local settings but the users replica, it says RUN ON username.

Im using Domino 6.5.4 as well as client version.

Please advise.

Hi guys thanks for the advise…I think Ive got it…after an hour of searching topics about local agent…many had suggested about Agent FAQ.

On the FAQ, there is a topic about “Something is disabling the agent”…so I followed the advise not to update the agent design.

I have to go to each PC though to change the Agent to RUN ON Local.

Another possible solution …

Skip the agent route and add an OnDatabaseOpen event to the database. Set up a timer that starts when the database is opened and runs a piece of code every nnn milliseconds. The timer will be disabled when the DB is closed.

Also if you set the agent to be a private agent and then activate it when the DB opens you may have some success.

A private agent is accessible only to its owner and is stored in the owner’s desktop file. Thus no replication across the system.

THe Db open event can let you schedule the agent, kick start it when the db opens etc. A scheduled private agent, started by the DB when it opens on a local machine, should fit the bill for you. You would need ot make sure the desktops have Enable Background Agents type functionality enabled.

You should be able to do something in the DB QueryOpen or PostOpen which would access the agent and enable it if necessary (agent.IsEnabled = True). That might rely on the agent setting “Choose server when agent is enabled”. If the users do not have designer access, then they should not be able to replicate the agent back to the server. The users don’t have designer access, right? — —

Rather than stopping there, I’ll go ahead and suggest using DXL as an alternative. Since I know nothing about DXL, I’ll have to double my bill (like any good consultant).
