Linux server config for Sametime Chat and domino

Sametime Version: 12
Operating System: Alamlinux 9.5

Problem/Query:

HI,

Not sure if this is a Sametime or Domino question.

I am about to create a new LINUX VM server to test Sametime Chat (we do not need Sametime Premium). There is a lot of information about installing Sametime but nothing on the initial configuration of the Linux server.

Note: There is no separate LDAP service so will use Domino 14 as LDAP.

Normally for Domino VM we would create the server with disk structure something like this:

/local = max

/ = 70GB

swap = 16GB

/home = 50GB

/boot = 1024

I see that the MongoDb suggests 200GB space. Does the Sametime data run in /local or do we need a separate mount point?

Or is there a suggested/recommended server build for Sametime and Domino?

I don’t want to set up the server to find that Sametime has runout of disk space somewhere.

Many thanks

For a Sametime Chat-only deployment (non-Premium):

  • Disk Space: HCL recommends a base minimum of 50–100 GB for Chat (unlike the 200 GB required for Sametime Premium Meetings + Chat). Actual database growth depends on your retention policies and traffic:

    • Test / Low Traffic: ~20 GB

    • Moderate Traffic: ~100 GB

    • High Traffic: 1 TB+ (SSD recommended)

  • Installation Space: MongoDB requires at least 1 GB available in /tmp during installation and 4 GB of configurable space out of its total binary requirement.

Recommendation: Do not host MongoDB data inside /local alongside Domino. Keep /local dedicated to /local/notesdata, and create a separate mount point/volume for MongoDB. This prevents high-volume persistent chat data, attachments, or log growth from impacting Domino or filling /.

Please note that HCL does not support or test installing Sametime 12.x and HCL Domino on the same operating system host due to container variable overlaps and port conflicts. You should deploy Sametime 12.x in its own VM/container host (using Docker or Podman) and connect it remotely to your Domino 14 server over LDAP.

Thankyou for the detailed reply. :folded_hands:
