Suppose the data directory is “c:\lotus\domino\data” and when I tried to create a new database to “e:\direct1\test.nsf” from Lotus Domino GUI (webadmin.nsf), I get the error indicating that the path has to be relative to the data directory. Is it a limitation of the Domino server ?
Can i get any good text notes where in the limitation are specified ?
This is not a limitation of domino, but rather the way it works. Apart from this, it IS possible to create dbs in a directory outside of the “configured domino data directory”. From the administrator client, go to the files tab and choose to create a new folder link. More information is available in the administration help db (installed together with domino).

Thanks thomas.
Can this file can be manually created. After creating this file, do we need to register with the Lotus Domino server. please let me know the commands etc… Also guide me to the suitable website to get more info.

It is just a text file, which you can edit manually or create with notepad or anything else. It doesn’t need to be registered or anything, but must have a .dir extension with a pathname inside as well. It should be documented in the Admin help, but I haven’t looked at the topic since R4, which I lat used this.

Use the Admin Client (Files panel, then Tools, Folder, New Link in the right sidebar) to create a link. Then inspect the file manually to see how it’s built:
The first line is always a redirection path
The 2nd to n-th lines are access control entries (optional).
