Launch the correct application from a link?

Hello (admins?, designer?, MS admins?),

our fax server sends emails into a mail database containing a file link like:

file://faxserver/directory/faxno.tif

when I click on this file link, I only get a browser window with a symbol for a not displayable image (like the browser would do, if no application in W2K is connected for this extension).

If I place the link directly into the browser (IE), it opens the related application (e.g. MS imaging, or ACDsee).

Can it have sth to do with IE shortening the link from “file://faxserver/…” to “//faxserver/…” ?

I’ve already asked this kind of question but noone has been able to give an answer.

Creating link to external document isn’t very well implemented in Notes.

Look how easy it is in Microsoft products, you don’t have to play with hotspots or anything like that.
