Junk mail folder issues

Two questions regarding the Junk Mail folder:

  1. Is there a setting that can increase the number of blocked mail addresses, either in the client or on the server? Some users are maxed out.

  2. Is there a way to copy or export the junk mail folder addresses, so I can copy those to the Sonicwall spam appliance installed in front of the Domino mail server? Nothing seems to work to “select all” junk addresses.

Subject: RE: Junk Mail issues

  1. How are you blocking the addresses? If it’s through Mail Rules, then you don’t want to add a lot of rules - it will have a large impact on Router performance. Mail Rules were not intended to replace a blacklist.

Since you mentioned the junk mail folder, I assume you are are using the Block Sender function of the Notes Client. However, it’s a little concerning that you mention that some users are maxed out. There is no limit to the number of senders you can block, but the overall list of blocked senders cannot exceed 32KB of data starting in 6.5.4. Are there users with that many blocked senders? This can also cause Router performance issues when delivering mail to such users, if they have that many conditions to work through.

In the server’s Configuration document → Router/SMTP → Restrictions and Controls → SMTP inbound controls, you can set up a private blacklist. You might also want to subscribe to a public blacklist if spam is a problem.

  1. There is no way to import or export the blocked senders list, there was an SPR created to request this functionality, tracked as SPR SHEZ6U4GER. However, it has not been implemented - it’s a customization set up by the Notes user, and wasn’t intended to integrate with third party applications.

Dan,

Thanks for the reply. You asked:<<<1. How are you blocking the addresses?>>>

We use several methods to block SPAM. First defense is a Sonicwall email appliance that gets about 70%. Next is Domino, with 4 or 5 blacklists operating. Finally, there is the Notes client. Some users have a challenge/response application running. Other users either delete the SPAM that gets through or use the “Block mail from sender” function, which sends that specific message to the Junk Folder.

Dan:<<<Are there users with that many blocked senders?>>> Yes.

Dan:<<<In the server’s Configuration document → Router/SMTP → Restrictions and Controls → SMTP inbound controls, you can set up a private blacklist.>>> Exactly. I can also set up that private blacklist in the SPAM appliance. Hence the need to copy, paste out of the Block Sender list.

Dan:<<<There is no way to import or export the blocked senders list . . . [Block Sender] wasn’t intended to integrate with third party applications.>>>

If there was a way to export that list, or just copy/paste the list, I could transfer that blocked sender functionality to a Notes or Sonicwall private blacklist. Nothing automated or integrated, just a manual cleanup for users who are using that function.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

The Blocked Rule Domains are stored in the Calendar profile. Using Notes Peek you can find them and copy them out. In Notes Peek, go to Profiles | Calendar Profiles | $FilterFormula…
