Subject: Is Vmware supported - errr no, not really
I’ve been up and down the road on this point as we are looking to migrate from R7.x on windows to R8.5 on Linux big boxes and are at the “do we vmware or multi-partition” crossraods.
Here’s a link which is IBM’s statement on supporting VMWare. It’s as clear as mud, but the bottom line I’ve copied below:
"VMware is a third-party (non-IBM) software product that provides a hypervisor environment. This virtualization environment allows x86 hardware to be partitioned to execute multiple copies of an operating system on a single hardware footprint. In general, IBM Software Group makes support statements at the operating system level, not at the hardware level. As a result, IBM Lotus does not formally certify or test VMware as a platform."
What advantage do you see in running the Windows verion of Domino on a Linux box instead of just running multiple Domino partitions of the Linux variety on that same box? You should have much better server performance without the VMware overhead.
I have to run Domino on a Windows server because it is needed for some of our 3. part applications for Domino. By this should I be able to run eg. one domino server on the Linux and as well one in Windows served by VMware. As alternative could I install Windows on the xseries and run partitioned servers. In that case will I be fixed to run two Domino servers with the same release.
Kjeld,I am surprised at the idea that Domino is not supported on VMWare.
I have been to IBM presentations where they used several laptops all running VMWare. I could not say for sure that any of them were running Domino, since if memory serves me right, the sessions were on WebSphere.
IBM/Lotus has used VMWare for years to demonstrate Domino and other IBM software. That doesn’t mean it is supported. A demo is a limited environment where you show only what works and you can’t do a lot of work-arounds that can’t be done in a production environment.
When I worked at IBM I installed and demoed Domino on Win98, WinXP and VMWare, all unsupported environments.
the minute you call support for help, they will tell you it is not supported and to install on a real windows installation to see if you have the same problem etc.
