Is it possible to preserve SMTP headers

…after a mail is forwarded internally?

My users get email from the outside world, which needs investigated for various reasons but after they forward the mail to me, all the SMTP header info that the original mail carried has thus been destroyed. Is there any possible way in Lotus Domino to force the system to preserve full original SMTP header data throughout the chain of forwarding once the email is inside the Domino system?

Every other email system vendor on the planet, including MS Exchange Server, preserves this vital information, why doesn’t Lotus?

I don’t see how either of those would help in any way to preserve the original SMTP header info of an email that the user receives from the Internet (using their browser & Domino Web Access), then forwards the email internally to me. The act of forwarding an email within Lotus/Domino still destroys all the original SMTP header info from the email.

Hi Neal,

What’s important, it’s the headers. In both links, it will extract them, no forward involved.

If it’s no enough, you will have to ask IBM. Maybe with Notes 8 and SpamGuru.

OK, I’ve got a follow-up to this one that may rack a few brains, but I’d really like to know:

What about a mail that is routed internally to a user NOT on the same server that receives the inbound SMTP message? I have a user whose mailfile is not on the same Domino server as the inbound SMTP receiving Domino server, so when user on this secondary mail server receive their internet mail, their headers are stripped and replaced with the following:

Whereas the original looked like this for someone on Server1:

X-pstn-neptune: 2/1/0.50/81

X-pstn-levels: (S: 0.16814/99.51764 CV:99.9000 FC:95.5390 LC:95.5390 R:95.9108 P:95.9108 M:95.5423 C:98.6951 )

X-pstn-settings: 3 (1.0000:1.0000) s cv gt3 gt2 gt1 r p m c

X-pstn-addresses: from noelv@testout.com [430/19]

X-pstn-disposition: quarantine

Is there a configuration setting somewhere (that I haven’t located yet) that controls the header conversion from Server1 (SMTP Inbound host running Domino with mail) to Server2 (stand-alone Domino mail server) when Server1 is simply routing the inbound SMTP message to Server2 via Notes?!?

Please, someone let me know before I pull ALL of my hair out.

Thanks!

Just have the end user click View, Show, Page Source (there might even be a toolbar button for that) and have them send that to you in a new email. If you need that functionality in DWA, there’s probably a way for you to add a button into the template that will do that, but it’s totally doable in Notes. The stock DWA is not going to have ALL the functionality you can get out of a dedicated Notes client.
