I have a 3 Gig mail file that has a 6.5.4 design on it. I need to send this file to another sub-Division that is still on R5. When they try to open the file they get an error ‘Invalid NSF version’. I have replaced design giving it an R5 template. I also tried to use the compact feature in Administrator to “Keep or revert database back to R5 format”. I also tried renaming the file to a .ns5. The user with the R5 client still cannot open it, anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this.
Subject: Invalid NSF Version - “New Copy” instead of “rename”
When you say that you “tried renaming the file to a .ns5” do you meant that you merely changed the file’s extension at the operating system level (presumably via Windows Explorer)? This would not change the mail database’s ODS (On Disk Structure), so an R5 client still wouldn’t be able to access it.
If that’ what you didm then why not try making the .NS5 using “File > Database > New Copy…” from within the Notes client, which with any luck will convert the database’s ODS to a valid R5 format.
Subject: Invalid NSF Version
If you merely chqanged the file’s extension at the operating system level (say, by renaming it with Windows Explorer) then the database’s ODS (internal “On Disk Structure”) will still be that for R6, hence the ‘Invalid NSF version’ message.
If you did this, then instead try, from within the Notes Client itself, making a new copy (File > Database > New Copy…) and only then using the .NS5 extension. With any luck, this new DB will be created with the necessary R5 ODS internal structure.

If you need to retain the same replica ID on the database I believe that you can do a Replication/New Replica and change the extension to NS5 for the new replica DB. I have not tried this but I’m pretty sure that it will work.
