We’re having a very strange intermittent problem with incoming Internet mail. More and more frequently, we are receiving mail addressed to invalid Internet addresses that are being delivered to valid users in our domain. For example, an e-mail addressed to mlewisf@mydomain.com will be delivered to kevin_leicht@mydomain.com.
We have ‘Verify that local domain recipients exist in the Domino direcotyr’ Enabled, but it’s obviously not working 100%. We Don’t have Address Lookup set to ‘Full name only’ but are considering it, but again, I don’t think it’s to blame as the address is invalid to begin with.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

The address displayed in the mail client as “to” is not necessarily the address used to deliver the mail. That address only exists in the envelope during transmission.
-
up the logging level so that the log records envelope recipients on inbound mail
-
look at the sources of these emails and see if they are listed in any block lists (http://openrbl.org) - if they are you could consider blocking

If you have a passport agreement, I would go to lotus with this.

I have the same problem. Spammers exploit a “hole” in SMTP.
Spammers can put your address in the rcpt to field but then put a bogus address within the data portion of the message. The address used in the data portion will appear in the SendTo field but will be delivered to all names in the rcpt to.
