We have about 50 managed mac users who all get their home directories (and thus their notes Data folder) stored on a 10.4.8 osx server. All the clients are running 6.5.5 on 10.4.6.
Users randomly get insufficient memory errors. Then notes crashes. Doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to what hardware they’re at or how much memory is has. All the workstations are exact clones. Permissions shouldn’t be a problem on either the workstations or the server volumes where their data folders reside - although I’ve goofed with both endlessly. We have lots of other non-managed mac users who have a local Data folder. They never have problems.
Googling ‘insufficient memory’ mostly comes up with domino issues and notes issues going back to the v4 days.
Anybody else seen this before?
TIA

Subject: Insufficient Memory
Hey Mark,
Where are there swap partitions defined? How much free space is available on the mount point where the home directories are located?
This might not be a RAM issue but a cache or disk space issue.

Subject: RE: Insufficient Memory
I absolutely agree that ‘insufficient memory’ is erroneous.
The swapfile on the local machines are in their default location for osx:
private/var/vm/
There is about 30g free on each workstation, 100’s on the network home locations.
I suspect what’s happening is notes is trying to write a file somewhere it shouldn’t be. Actually, I’m willing to bet large sums on it. I see that one other person in the mac forum had this problem before but there really wasn’t an answer given in that thread. I might have to call tech support on this one…
Subject: RE: Insufficient Memory
After spending some time on the phone with technical support, they came to the conclusion that it’s because I’m using roaming user profiles - not supported on either platform. They suggested that I switch users who need to use different machines to notes roaming users.
Notes roaming users aren’t supported on the mac platform either. Considering that I’ve been putting users’ data folders on their networked, home directory since the R5 days with no problems until 6.5.1.
Is anybody else doing multiple users? Or is everybody here ‘one computer - one user’, data folder in the notes folder?
Subject: RE: Insufficient Memory
I have done the Roaming Users in Windows at a previous job with no problem. Sorry I can’t offer more in way of help with osX. Can you make use of DWA?

Roaming Profiles ARE supported on the Mac, but multi-user installation is NOT supported. And without the latter, the former is pretty much useless.
We store users’ data folders on the network, but then copy them down to local when the users log in to their Mac. Any changes are copied back up to the server when they logout.
We wrote our own scripting stuff to handle all this, in the absence of anything useful from IBM/Lotus. I wasn’t directly involved in that project, but can try to get more details for anybody that’s interested.
Cheers,
