I used Installshield Tuner to customize an *.mst file and then used the silent install feature. The only customisation I did was to copy over my own modified bookmark.ntf file which launches forces the launching of our corporate welcome page (could get the new corporate page feature to work either) . I have used this silent install on 12 installation so far and in 4 of them, it didn’t copy over the notes.exe file, which is fairly noticeable.
If I repeated the install using the setup.exe regular install, the notes.exe copies over fine. What is weird is the fact that it worked fine in 8 other installs. Now I am worried there may be other files it didn’t copy over, but things seem to be working OK after repeating the installation manually. In each case, I was using the silent install to upgrade from 5.0.11 client. It failed on 3 NT and one Win2000 workstation.
Subject: Installshield Silent Install sometimes doesn’t copy over notes.exe
Some feedback on silent install.
I took some advice from the redbook “Upgrading to Lotus Notes and Domino 6” and decided to backup some critical files before the install. So, I pointed the ‘upgrade by mail’ document at a batch file that looks like this.
The redbook suggests using the parm /qn for a silent install, but I used /qb so the user would see progress throughout the installation. The downside is that /qb also has a cancel button so that the installation could be interupted.
Subject: Not up-to-date Windows installer may be the culprit
Thanks for the tip. I am using the /qb installshield option rather than the truly silent /qn option. Its better to see progress on screen than to rely on staring at the HD and CD-Rom lights. I also downloaded the Windows Installer 2 “installer” from Microsoft and have been running this first on our machines(takes 15 seconds at most), then doing the Notes upgrade. So far this seems to be working.
Subject: Quick thought - on doesn’t copy over notes.exe
I am getting ready to try the same thing so I was interested in your post.
My thought is that the OS must have a lock on the notes.exe file when the upgrade/install is taking place. Is there any provision to prevent the user from having Notes running, or are there any ‘helper apps’ like Notes Minder that might have a lock on the file??
If you get this one figured out, let me know at charvey@NOSPAM_brotherhoodmutual.com.
