Installing Notes 8.5.1 in Citrix XenApp 5.0

I am working on installing Notes 8.5.1 Standard in Citrix XenApp 5.0 FP2 on Windows 2003. So far, I am having success.

Up until now, I have not had any success in any of the 8.x versinos using eclipse. I’ve used the single user install, and running an xcopy via the usrlog2.cmd script since version 4, so to say it’s been frustrating to not be able to get 8 to work is an understatement.

In all previous versions, the script included xcopy /s. Apparently there are some empty folders in notes 8 that are required. After I changed this to xcopy /e, I have been having alot of luck getting 8.5.1 working. I can’t take credit for that; found it on a random blog while searching for any other install instructinos.

I am now currently working on setting up and using the Shared Notes Data directory. Accourding to IBMs documentation, it is safe to move the Help, Modem, and W32 folders into the shared data folder.

I am wanting to tweak this further. I just moved the domino folder into the shared directory as well, as it seemed to contain nothing more than script files and css supporting java class files. I couldn’t see any reason this had to be unique to each user. I tested three people on the same server with the domino folder in the shareddatafolder and not the user’s personal data folder. So far no problems.

Has anyone else tried this? What were your experiences? Are there any other folders/files that can be safely moved out of the user’s data folder and into the SharedData folder? Themes and Properties are next on my list to try.

(I do not, and will not, have the root drive redirect to the users’ profile. It is stored on a network share.)

Subject: ARGGGG! Problems again!!!

I thought 8.5.1 in citrix was going smoothly. All tests went fine. I even uninstalled it and reinstalled it as a multiuser install as noted now possible on the notes wikis. this too worked great.

UNTIL…I tried running notes as a seamless app. Back to the issues of the splash screen showing and nothing happening.

AAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

This problem is reported by many in the citrix forums, mainly for 8.0.2 and 8.5. Some firm is going to figure this out and charge big money for the fix. Either that, or the rest of us will say “F&^k it. I’m done.” and move on. I hear Outlook webaccess is pretty slick.

Subject: 99.9% of the time this is caused by Notes not being able to find notes.ini

Let’s dive on this and figure this out once and for all. Please contact me at zamfir at us.ibm.com.

Subject: Lotus 8.5 on citrix (xenapp 5)

Hi there, yes I have been trying unsuccessfully too to get lotus 8.5 to work on citrix 4.5 (xenapp 5) for months now, you get the login password screen and then nothing, absolutely nothing comes up after that.

any solution yet?

Subject: ALL RESOLVED!!

Here’s how I got it to work.Changed the Working directory path under the location property of the application properties section from what it always had set (pointing originally to their data directory in their personal mapped network drive) changed this to the path to the program folder e.g M:\Program Files\lotus\notes, worked like a charm

Subject: Can you elaborate?

Hi Kym

Good job getting your seamless app to work. Can you elaborate where you made that change? I am looking at the published app properties within my Citrix console. I have the command line paeth to notes.exe, which includes the =W:\notes\data\notes.ini.

I also have the working directory, which is what I presume you changed. But mine is already pointing to the C: drive, not the users’ data directory.

Thanks

Matt

Subject: Spoke to soon!

The Working Directory path that was listed in my environment was C:\program files\lotus\notes\framework. I modified that path to stop at notes\ on a server with a multi-user install first, and that did not work. However, it DID work on the single user install!

Thanks!

Matt

I’d like to ditto the last request. I’ve been looking for a concrete list of steps and haven’t found anything yet. Most comments seem to assume you’ve been doing on a frequent basis, but I haven’t done this since we set up 5.0.x.
