I currently need to run both R5 and ND6 Notes clients on my laptop. I am trying to install ND6.5 over the top of my earlier version of ND6, which resides in my C:\Notes 6 directory, but the option to change the default C:\Lotus\Notes directory (where R5 resides) is greyed out. My notesnsd.ini file in Windows points to the correct directory i.e. notes.ini=c:\Notes 6\notes.ini
Can anyone tell me how to install ND6.5 in the directory of my choice? Surely it’s not necessary to uninstall my existing ND6 client first?

There can only be 1 registered version of Notes 6 on a machine. If Notes 6.0.x is already installed, 6.5 will always install over it.
You could try changing the registry paths to the directories you want and then install 6.5 but then the registry will point to the 6.5 installation and not the original 6.0.x installation.

But that’s just it: I DO want to install 6.5 over the top of 6.0. If only it would!! My problem is that 6.5 wants to install in my R5 directory, but I want to keep my R5 as it is for the time being. While I want both R5 and ND6 clients, I definitely don’t want 2 versions of ND6 client. When I originally installed 6.0 it was quite happy to let me choose an alternative directory, but 6.5 appears to be not so obliging.
… and you select a different location, it wil still install over the location specified in the registry.Your best change is to rename the R5 directory, install 6.5, and change it back
Thank you both for your suggestions. With a bit of trial and error I found that 6.5 would allow me to choose a directory other than the default ONLY if I renamed the directory where 6.0 is currently installed (i.e. C:\Notes 6). The option to change directory was disabled regardless of whether or not I renamed the default C:\Lotus\Notes directory, where R5 resides. So, I am going to temporarily rename both directories, do the installation into a new C:\Notes 6 directory, copy into it any data I want from the old C:\Notes 6 directory and then delete the old directory. And, of course, restore the name of the default directory. Messy, but I can’t think of any other solution.
Yes, indeed, the HLM\Software\Lotus\Notes registry entry does point to my R5 directory, maybe because I have updated R5 more recently than ND6. So, if I edit that entry to point to ND6 instead, it should allow me to install to that directory?

That’s pretty much what I ended up doing, too, except that, after changing the names of both my R5 and ND6.0 directories, I proceeded with the installation into a new C:\Notes 6 directory. Then I copied into the new directory all the files I wanted to keep from my old (renamed) 6.0 directory (notes.ini, desktop6.nsf, names.nsf etc.). Then deleted the old directory and restored the name of the R5 directory. It’s all working fine.

Wow, I had this problem when trying to install the beta and just figured I didn’t have time, and I’d wait until the full release came out.
Bit disappointing to find it’s still an issue.
From previous experience it definately seems to make a difference what order you install the clients when attempting to run multiple client versions on a single machine.
