Info on operating system perfomance with Domino

Hi,

I am looking for information on the performance of the various operating systems Domino 6.5.x runs on so I can compare each to decide what OS would be best to run Domino on. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott,

The previous comment is valid and truthfully any documentation you find is going to be written by the vendor so it will have very skewed results. The only alternative is to either have the experience with multiple systems (meaning hire a consultant) or to give your specifics on here and maybe someone on here can give you some advice. If you really want to see some numbers just go to google and search for “domino performance benchmark” you should find what you are looking for admist the rubble.

Thanks for your reply and I agree, this is very hard to nail down. Here is what I am looking for.

  1. Needs to be up 24/7.

  2. Mail Only

  3. 2500 users

They currently have Windows and Solaris, but AIX or linux is not out of the question. I personally only have experience with Domino on Windows, so I can not answer my IT managers question about other OS and would they be better than Windows. The hardware cost is not much of a problem, just as long as the server is up 24/7 and it is not crawling when 2500 users are accessing it.

Any other info would be helpful.

2500 mail users is certainly not out of the realm of performance of a clustered Intel/Win2k server. Clustering will provide failover in the event of a server crash (of course, you’ll need two servers at least to implement clustering), but since cost does not appear to be a critical factor, it would make sense to look into a high performance Intel/Win2k clustered environment.

I know nothing of running Domino on Solaris, but would imagine (hardware performance aside), it would be little different performance-wise from running on AIX (or any of the other “legal” Unix flavors, for that matter). However, one thing to consider is that IBM is in the middle of a huge lawsuit with SCO/Caldera. SCO/Caldera has been making a LOT of noise about revoking IBM’s license for AIX due to the ongoing litigation and overall contention between the two companies. I’m not certain how that will play out.

The same caution could apply to the use of Linux. SCO/Caldera has notified a couple of thousand of the largest companies in the world that their use of Linux constitutes an infringement of SCO’s intellectual property and that they intend to begin collecting royalties on those companies which use Linux.

So, if you want to use Domino in a Unix or Unix-type environment, there are complications well beyond performance.

To throw another curveball at you, IBM clearly intends that the platform of choice for Notes/Domino in the future be some flavor of DB2 - so you might also consider an AS/400 platform, which would certainly be capable of meeting your reliability, sizing and performance criteria.

Scott, “performance” (and how that is defined is pretty darned problematic all by itself) is only one of a host of elements to be considered when selecting an O/S for Notes/Domino. Most shops of which I’m aware are most definitely NOT agnostic when it comes to operating systems, and generally the O/S is a given based on organizational criteria established long before any servers are set up.

Having said that, there are still a multiplicity of factors to take into account. Is it a mail-only server? Application server? What about sizing? Tens of users? Thousands of users? What about fault tolerance within your organization? Are you looking for 100%, 24/7, never go down reliability? What about cost? O/S’s are by no means priced exactly the same. Never mind that most O/S’s are platform-dependent. What hardware are you considering using for your N/D architecture?

Before anyone can give you anything like a real analysis of “performance”, they need a better understanding of just what that performance is to constitute.
