If I have inboud recipient controls enabled, so that is checks to see if users exists in Domino Directory, if user does not exist, will it STILL send a delivery failure report. I am moving over to 6 servers very soon, and I am hoping to resolve this problem of thousands of delivery failure reports, due to “User does not Exist” overloading my server, sometimes crashing it. We are under major spam attack!!!
Thanks

Subject: Inbound Recipient Controls
To the best of my recollection it does not generate a delivery failure report, but I only had it on for a day or two. When I had that turned on and was getting mail rejected for registered users so I had to turn it off.
If you are having server crashes because of the volume of spam you should probably beef up your Domino server. I reject nearly 1200 spam messages a day and my server doesn’t miss a beat. It’s an iSeries, though.
Lastly, if your mail.box’es are filling up with delivery failure reports, go into the Replication settings on each mail.box and set it to delete anything older than X days and check the box. Then it will keep itself cleaned up and you won’t have to do it manually.
Below is a URL with recommendations for helping to control spam in a Domino R5 environment. It all applies to R6 as well, but with R6 you can also set up DNS blacklisting and server-side mail rules. Let me know if you need any help or have any questions about anything I mentioned here.
