Import and Export in Lotus 123 format

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I went to import in the wk1 format and I was not able to so I searched the internet and here is a way around the changes to the notes 8.5 client.

It worked for me:

Subject: Seems to be fixed in 8.5.1

Guys,

Have just downloaded 8.5.1 (French multilingual) and found out that 123 export format was available again…

Pfff…saved by the gong.

However I agree with posted comments about needing a csv or direct excel import. I’d add a caveat. Why not an Open office/Symphony import/export feature ? I’ve worked with 123 since it first came out in the early 80’s (yeah, I’m an veteran, so waht…!).

But having to install it everywhere and in the end do these manipulations for my customers over and over again is time-consuming.

IBM, if you do not want to make this excel feature available for whatever strategic reason, I can accept, but please do it at least for your own inhouse product Symphony. You’d be helping many users/developpers/integrators along the way and pushing Symphony a little bit more into organisations.

Subject: No need to have 1-2-3

My new laptop doesn’t have 1-2-3 on it, but I can still save an .xls as a .wk3, and then import it to notes. Save yourselves the trouble, no more need to install that 13 year old software (my version was from 1997) to do imports into Notes.

Subject: If third-party apps isn’t a problem, take a look at “Notes Import Export Library”

Subject: We are investigating

We did purposely make this change in 8.5 to remove 1-2-3 (SPR QBJL7FG7RW), but are currently reconsidering whether this was the right decision or not (SPR RGID7NKKQ2).

Subject: Include support for Excel import

Even better than restoring 1-2-3 import functionality - how about including support for Excel (or ODF) importing?

Subject: *Yes, this is important, especially if 123 file import was taken away

Subject: Exactly!

I can’t even understand why we have to debate it/request it… Lotus, JUST DO IT !

Subject: Exporting to Lotus 123 files

I have a large client that is quite upset that the ability to export to Lotus 123 has been removed. It would be quite useful to know when and if the feature will be re introduced. Please let us have a heads up on this.

Subject: NOTES.INI settings to re-enable Lotus 1-2-3 (.WKS) Import & Export . . .

Love how Lotus take away a feature that is invaluable for ad-hoc importing of data into Lotus Notes applications . . . and do not replace it with an alternative. Lotus, please add an Import/Export to .XLS (not .XLSx). Pretty please?

Anyhoo, you can edit the NOTES.INI of your 8.5 Lotus Notes client to use this work-around:

Enabling Import - Add a line like this:

VIEWIMP6=Lotus 1-2-3,0,_IWKSV,,.123,.WK1,.WK3,.WK4,.WKS,.WR1,.WRK,,4,

Enabling Export - Add a line like this:

VIEWEXP6=Lotus 1-2-3,0,_XWKS,,.123,.WK1,.WK3,.WK4,.WKS,.WR1,.WRK,,4,

Note: The VIEW[IMP/EXP]6 must not conflict with an existing value, so may need to be replaced by the next available number e.g VIEWIMP7, VIEWIMP8 etc.

Hth.

Subject: Another thank you, and request to Lotus

First off, thank you for providing the ini settings, which has avoided considerable issues with one of my clients. Though they use M$ products (ie Office) for day to day work, a spreadsheet of data is maintained in 123 precisely because it imports easily into Notes.

My point to Lotus is, importing spreadsheets is a common requirement for me and many other consultants and developers. I have converted Excel spreadsheets into 123 innumerable times over the years for this purpose. So either provide an Excel import, or retain the 123 import, because one way or another, this needs to be possible.

Thanks again!

PW

Subject: Thank you!!!

I have asked a lot of people that are notes savey and had no clue…

I can’t believe other people are not in search of this solution…

U rock!

Subject: I vote for simply making Excel imports work

I experienced the same issue today. Not that I do this all the time, but I do import from spreadsheets and create Notes documents for each row. Pre-Office 2007 and Notes 8.5 this was easy - Save as a .WK3 file in Excel (.wk4 seemed to have some issue) and import Lotus 123 into Notes. Nothing could have been faster/slicker than that. If I needed to import response documents, I’d use something like ZMERGE.

So today I had to pull out an old laptop with Notes 7, install an old version of Office 2003, and do my Save As WK3 from Excel and import into Notes 7.

Thanks for posting these .ini settings - it will at least solve the Notes side of the issue.

I’d recommend that since Excel seems to be very happy with a .CSV file exported from Notes (provided that you use .CSV for the file extension), that Lotus adds an import for CSV (from Excel)

The Tab Delimited import for Notes 8.5 I’ve never got to work coming from Excel (ever) - even in previous releases of Excel & Notes.

Subject: Notes Help says it works

Jennifer or any IBM’er :Let’s make these work again since

  1. Many of us have used this previously since it was available in previous releases and

  2. The documentation that ships with 8.5 states that both 123 and Microsoft Excel are supported!!
