How to upgrade the database I created from 6.5 to 8.5

Hi,

We have a database created from scratch in Domino Designer 6.5 and it is now running on a Lotus Notes 8.5 server. What & how should I do to upgrade the design of this database from 6.5 to 8.5? Thanks!

Subject: Why do you need to?

I agree with Carl’s response, but I will also go the other direction. Do you need to, and why? (You probably do, but the “why” will inform what you do.) I say that you probably do need to because most of us have improved our skills from R6.5 to R8, so chances are there were things you did when you wrote that app that could be done better. However, if you are coming from a place where you just want to know what you have to do to get it to run on R8, then the answer might be “nothing”. It will likely just work.

You might want to update the On-Disk structure, to improve operational performance. See the Admin Help for instructions.

Maybe you want to improve the application’s performance and ease-of-use by taking advantage of capabilities that weren’t present in R6.5. First, know your application well. Second, read the “what’s new” in the Designer help and decide what you can apply.

Maybe what you want is a facelift so users can tell you upgraded from R6.5 to R8. Get some advice from web designers.

Like Carl said, your initial question can be answered in many ways.

Subject: Let me ask you a question back

How long is the piece of string?

There are so many variations on your question. You need to give a lot more information about your application, its design and how it is used to get any kind of credible answer.
