How to upgrade storage size in Lotus server

hi :

have a question… my current notes server directory will run out of space soon (90%)… and is planning to upgrade the storage capacity. the server is currently running on windows 2003 server… and has 2 drives.

C drive = windows system 10G

D drive = notes and data folder 50G

wat is the solution to expand the 50G to a bigger capacity…

assume i add another 50G harddisk… how can i combine the new space with the current D:\ drive.

cheers

If you simply add another 50G disk as drive E:, you could create a directory link in your data directory on D:, pointing at a directory on E:, that way spreading your data directory over two disks.

Let’s say you want to move all mail files from D: to E:. Bring the server down, move the D:\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail directory to E:\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail . Create a text file in D:\Lotus\Notes\Data . Name it mail.dir and make the content of the file:

E:\Lotus\Notes\Data\mail

This way, Domino will see the file mail.dir as a directory link and use it’s content to find the actual directory on E:.

Read in the admin help about directory and database links, and see what you can do.

Subject: Is your data drive an array?

If your Notes data directory is on a drive array, you may be able to just expand the array to add more disk space.

First contact your hardware vendor to find out how to expand the array at the hardware level.

Then go to this article to see how to expand the Windows volume:

Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 325590: How to use Diskpart.exe to extend a data volume in Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000

We have done this successfully several times with HP SCSI drive arrays. The HP controllers were even able to expand the arrays in place so we did’t have to restore the data from tape.

thank you for all prompt reply.

read the server RAID manager and found out that the notes drive is current running on RAID 5EEE using total 5 disks. (100GB each) (i think 4 are active and one as spare if i see it physically)

if i want to purchase disks to expand the current capacity, how many disks do i need to purchase ?

Of course, another way to look at it is from a standard networking point of view, and either add a raid controller or use MS built in raid software. Then you could either have no failover or add an additional hard drive (If memory serves, RAID5 requires 3 at least) and have one for failover. The upside here is that you’re separating points of failover. You don’t have to worry about direc tory links if you want to add more drives in the future.

This is fairly straighforward, but how you do it depends on your hardware (whether or not you have a raid controller in your computer and use that or go with the MS raid option). In the long run, doing it this way may be less of a headache than adding directory links as it separates your points of failure (OS/hardware/application).
