How to learn Java in Domino

I am a pretty good Domino developer and I have a basic understanding of Java. But I can’t figure out how to use Java in Domino. In reading beginner Java articles from publications like The View (http://www.eview.com), they give outdated libraries and things like that.

I would like some suggestions of good, current books, which will help me use Java within Domino.

Thanks.

Subject: How to learn Java in Domino

In my opinion, Java for Domino is made up of two seperate things.

  • The Domino Java API

  • The Java programming language

If you know how to use the LotusScript Domino classes (NotesDatabase, NotesView, NotesDocument etc) then you already know most of the Domino Java API because it’s virtually identical. The Help database even has a language cross reference between LS - Java and has plenty of simple examples.

For the second part, the Java Programming language, there are loads of tutorials out there including Sun’s own tutorial.

The most important thing to remember is that the version of Java in Domino 6.x is 1.3 and in Domino 7.x it’s 1.4.

If you are writing Java for Domino you might find an Eclipse plugin, called Domiclipse (http://www.domiclipse.com), which I wrote to be of some help. It allows you to use the absolutely fantastic Eclipse Java development environment to write agents and script libraries.

If you get hold of a copy of the Domino Javadoc written by Ferdinand Prantl (http://domino-javadoc.sourceforge.net/) and integrate it into Eclipse, life is even easier.

We have both a Beginner level and an Intermediate level. The Intermediate course for ND7 should be out in a month or two.
