How to enable view refresh without locking notes

I am very confuse, if I choose option to click refresh button, or press shift + f9, or click notes client icon from designer, notes will be locked until refresh is done. but sometime I just need to click the view shortcut on left hand side, and I will see message view is being updated, and I can still use other notes feature. Is it because I am using v7.0?

Another question, automatic after first use, will it be much faster, when will notes actually do the background database view refresh, do I have to open the database?

Hi,

  1. clicking refresh - simply refreshes the view to show the latest entries / changes.

  2. CTRL Shift F9 rebuild the entire index for all views in the chosen database

  3. The message to say that the view is being updated is either when someone else is rebuilding the index, or an agent is running where there are a lot of documents to process, or when the server is updating the index (eg. updall) - you need to ensure that you don’t rebuild large indexes during business hours. In R5 and above this feature was enabled to allow you to continue to use the rest of the database while the index is being rebuilt.

  4. Automatic after first use - this means that the index will only be built once the view has been accesed by at least one user. Also this means that you never have to update the view index manually - by clicking CTRL Shift F9 for instance. I use this for most views. But the index will only be built if a user access it - thereby saving space on the server. If you select ‘Automatic’ then the index will be updated on the fly as data changes for the view in question - regardless if someone accesses it or not.

Then use point 4:

  1. Automatic after first use - this means that the index will only be built once the view has been accesed by at least one user. Also this means that you never have to update the view index manually - by clicking CTRL Shift F9 for instance. I use this for most views. But the index will only be built if a user access it - thereby saving space on the server. If you select ‘Automatic’ then the index will be updated on the fly as data changes for the view in question - regardless if someone accesses it or not. so you don’t need to use CTRL Shift F9.

Don’t use the ‘CTRL Shift F9’ option, set the index option on the view in designer to automatically update the index. This way your client will never be locked. CTRL Shift F9 should only be used in emergency…

There isn’t… other than getting two PC’s.

You should try to address why the views are taking so long to refresh.

How many docs are in the view?

What changes are you making to the docs?

How long does it take to refresh?

56000 docts thus far, I just created a new docs. It takes 30 mins to almost an hour for the refresh. There are lots of categorization (almost make use of all the columns and formula in the columns that allowed).

What I did now is to change it to manual changes, so that I can create a doct one at a time, also I have reduced the documents being selected. So, only after I finished update, than I refresh the view.

However, how I wish the view can be updated and when new doct being created. Using this option, user might misunderstood the total numbers were the old one… :frowning:
