How to create a self-displaying Notes CD?

Our DRP consists of a couple of Notes databases containing data and attachments. I reguarly burn these to a CD for offsite storage, and usually include a copy of the Notes install on the CD.

What I’d really like to be able to do, is have the database launch automatically whether the user has notes installed or not…

Either… Set up an autoRun to execute a special version of Notes on the CD (ie: under windows)

or… Create a bootable CD that starts linux on CD (eg: like Knoppix) and runs an installed version of Notes.

Has anyone done this, does anyone know if it is possible, or can anyone suggest an alternative?

Thank you.

Similar question shows up in the R4/5 forum periodically, here’s a link to several:

Short answer/opinion - I don’t think Notes has an Access like ‘compiled’ db function. If you have the db, you need Notes to read it.

IANAL but if you’re putting Notes on every CD, you do have licenses for each and every CD you burn, right?

If you find something that does work, please be sure to post it back here.

ps - re alternatives - tough and good question that isn’t just a Notes question. How do we deal with any proprietary system over time, especially if we need to recreate the entire environment in place at the time of document/record creation? This is a major issue for current electronic systems and there are no good answers today. You’ll need to decide what about the data/apps is important, how long you need to keep it, and then decide the best way to retrieve the data over the term of your retention period. Options run from ‘print PDFs of everything’ to ‘keep a sever, OS, Domino, and Notes client around until no longer needed’ to ‘port the data to some other system, document the expected differences (probably UI stuff), and the risk you take by migrating the data’ to ‘???’.

Best of luck.
