âŚin the perfect world, two-three admins, one server, no users.UhhâŚ
Subject: how many?
How about 3 servers, 3500 users and 3 âadminsâ with NO TRAINING!
Beat that!
Subject: re: how many?
Well, we had no official admins for ~3 months after all our admins quit (a help desk person with admin experience was keeping it bandaged together). They didnât all quit at once and they gave notice, just no replacement was selected for a while.
They finally assigned one person as the admin, with no training and no experience (other than as a user). Between the time they told him his new assignment and when he got back to his desk, they had replied to a number of users whoâd been having problems saying âXyzâs the new admin, heâll take care of your problemâ.
A month or so later, he got to go to an admin course.
In the mean time, I came on board without any training, learning it all via help files and the Internet. A year or two later, I went to a Lotusphere conference and then a couple âupgrade to v8â coursesâbut Iâd gotten it all pretty well figured out by then. A bout the help desk guy: we were told to figure things out on our ownânot to bother him.
Oh, and within about 2 months of us taking over, the security group said we needed to figure out a way to prevent users from seeing the HTTP password hashes for other users. A month or so later, we had to upgrade all the clients to 7.0.3 to address another security vulnerability. Also, for the next year or so, we kept getting asked âWe told the former admin about xyz problem several months/years agoâhave you fixed it yet?â. We kinda hit the ground running. ![]()
We have 3,000-3,200 users, on 6 servers on 3 different OSs (5 servers on 2 different OSs nowâand pretty much just running email with BES). Iâm also kinda interested in the general staffing levels for Domino shops.
PS: Things arenât doing too badly nowâIâve gotten things figured out pretty well and we also got most of the âleftoverâ problems fixed (now itâs mostly new ones after the v8 upgradeâa whole 'nother topic!).
Subject: No training is tough to beat (at least not on a legal way).

we have 4 admins and a technical team lead.We have 20 servers ( including 4 just for mail, the rest are apps and archive).
We support 12500+ users.
We support many other apps\systems as well as lotus\domino. So we are a very busy team.

It is the little things, like how well you get supported by OS folks (server and client), if you end up doing a lot of support or not, if the spam and virus filters are somewhere or your business and a like.
However, to me that size of installation should have a backup (second person in the know of all details, no way that both are out of the office at the same time etc)- internal or external
