How does one use a search hit?

  • I have a list of hits in Search, which is nicely organized and easy to generate, and double-clicking on a hit opens that hit.- BUT that hit is not the Form it claims it is. Instead it’s some “html-ized” verson of that form, which I presume is DXL. Not useful when I’m editing a Form using Designer … I’d expect this to open the indicated Form in Designer using the normal Form editor, not some transliterated representation of that Form.

  • Now perhaps I searched incorrectly. Synopsis used to be how I did this, but that seems to be missing in R8.5 DDE. When I click Search I get “File”, “Java”, “JavaScript”, and “Plug-in”. NONE of them seem appropriate to me, but “File” generates the results described above.

  • What am I missing?

  • I searche the Forum for clues on searching, but found nothing there, either. Could have missed it. Despite full-text there’s a measure of hit-or-miss involved.

  • Thanks for your time…

Subject: a few answers

  • yes, it is DXL, and double clicking (at this point in time) opens up an XML editor on the DXL. It is not recommended that you actually edit the form that way, but it can be used as a good way to find things in a database. A file search is appropriate - design elements are considered files by Eclipse (and a database is considered to be a project by Eclipse). This is the Eclipse search we are leveraging, and it clearly has no concept of what a form is - so when it asks for the contents of a file to search, our best option is DXL. In the future, we will try to open the form editor instead, but positioning to the correct location will be a challenge. Even though it is imperfect, users have found the ability to search sufficiently useful that we chose not to hide this Eclipse function.

  • synopsis is still available - it’s on the popout from the Application menu, both from the File level, and from the right click.

Subject: Thanks Maureen!..

  • While it’s not the answer I’d like, it is good to know I did it “right”. (grin) I actually wound up using the information in the DXL to locate the appropriate portion of the Form, and got where I wanted that way.- Would it be possible for the system to do exactly what I did? It’s all in Eclipse … while search may not have knowledge of the Form, that knowledge must exist somewhere because I am able to open and edit a Form. It probably isn’t easy or it would have been done already, but there it is. (grin)

  • Thanks for the info…

Subject: XML Editor to change a design element

I was very pleased with the functionality to search, replace or edit using Open Projects in my Eclipse Navigator view and then using XML Editor.

After using this features all over, and started testing I realised that a lot things have gone mad with my forms and subforms, and some others that I didn’t find out yet.

So IBM Lotus put this out, so we can mess up our entire application, and some experts says now that it’s not recommended ? JOKE !

I’ve been working with Notes for long enough, and I’ve never seen the Designer with so many bugs, crashes and “hidden” surprises.

Ok, it seems that I’m an expert now, don’t use this XML Editor to edit your forms or anything like that !!!

Cheers.
