How do I run multiple agents on the same databases at the same time?

I have an agent that updates data in a view. When the data is processed it got removed from the view. Since I can only start the agent in the morning (4 AM), and I would like the agent to finish early (before 8 AM), I would need different instances of the agent to run at the same time.

The agent is accessing 2 databases; I could create different views on both databases, which are each handle by 1 agent, but I have the impression that they don’t really work at the same time. When 2 of those agents run at the same time, the other one doesn’t do anything. To make this happen, I had to create the second agent in a seperate database… So, that does really work as well.

Any idea on how it could work ?

Two instances of the same agent wont work as one will queue up behind the other. Besides I can not see how it would be faster as it would have to switch back and forth. You say you want it to start at 4 am and be finished by 8. How many documents are beinging processed and what are you doing to them. I have an agent that opens a document then does several different read and writes to other documents and it processes something in the order of 100 documents per second and this is not on a particularly fast server. If an agent takes 4 hours to process I think you need to take a serious look at what it is doing and how it is doing it.

I would agree on the others on assessing an agent that is taking 4 hours to run. That is a bit excessive and you may be able to do things more efficiently.

Barring that, it is a little unclear as to what you are asking the agents to do and why you need the second agent kick off before the first is done. However, the answer may be to merge the functionality of the two agents together so that a single agent is doing the function of both.

The agents reads and updates 80.000 documents + for each document, it goes and read with a key, in another database to update that line as well. The reason for the update is, that I want the agent to be able te restart and therefor not reprocesses the data. I’ve done that via a field that is put to done, when the record is handles ==> it disappears from the view. We only allow agent to run for 30 minutes, so the agent is scheduled every 30 min, to handle the remaining data. What I could do, is as well in the “agent”-db, as in the other db, create views by customer. That way, they would not contain any overlap, but I still think that the agents would not be run concurrently. Hope this clearifies a bit …

Myriam,

You cannot have two scheduled agents which run concurrently from the same db. You can have many of these in various db’s all reaching into your one db, but I am not convinced that this is faster processing than having just one instance of the agent. As well, your chances of rep/save conflicts seem dramatically to increase if you have multiple instances.

I’d focus on performance of the agent instead.
