How can I "selectively" prevent return receipts based on who's opening the document?

Sometimes the security team of the company I do admin work for requires to “snoop” private mail of users, and so far we’ve been simply adding a “remove receipt” agent that runs before new Mail Arrives, to it so that return receipts get stripped out not to give out that someone else is reading their mail.

Problem is that we’ve got a few smartypants that figured it out, and realised that their recipients were not returning receipts, and a few even found the agent by going in View/Agents and disabled it (yes… stupid, but they have manager access to their mail, don’t ask… not my choice).

So… is there anything that exists (code snipet or tool) that would allow 3rd parties from opening user’s mail without triggering a return receipt, but without preventing the user himself from sending them?

I’ve thought of a conditional agent that would only stip the return receipt request flag if the user is not the owner of the mailfile, but since this has to run before the mail arrives, I don’t know how to add it back after the person’s done reading the mail…

I’m amazed that your security team are allowed to just read people’s (snoop) at will, is this not a breach of privacy? At our place Security must contact HR first before reader access to a mail file is granted.

As for being smart there are other ways to figure out who has been in your mailfile!

Anyway in response to your question, how about an agent that if RR exists changes it to X then run it again and it changes it back to 1.

Or just read the body field through the properties tab!

If you don’t want the users to see you accessing their database, your best bet is to just take a copy of it, and read that. Do this from a disconnected machine and empty the mail-box to prevent the sending of receipts.

Yanick,

You could modify your form (mail template), but that seems overly annoying for such a task.

Is your purpose to be able to read through these emails? I think one can forward an email without triggering the rr, so maybe just select a bunch and forward them to your AdminSnooper account. Then you can sit in that mail file at your leisure and search for whatever it is you need to search for, and then delete the mail. That also seems better than sitting in someone else’s mail file for a long time, given the chance of forgetting where you are and thinking it’s your mail or something (just shows how bad my memory is).

I LIKE that! Good idea, that’s the best I’ve read so far… At this point I could even write a mail forwarding agent on the user’s mailfile and add a special tag in the calculated subject line so you can filter the mail at the receiving end.
