HotSpot Rectangles -- Wish to Eliminate Borders

Hi All,

I imported a GIF file to my email and I am now attempting to place “Rectangle Hotspots” throught the image (Select image, choose Picture>Add Hotspot Rectangle). The hotspot links work fine but the rectangles remain clearly visible as dotted boxes in the saved email file. Is there a way to eliminate the box borders? I searched but have not found any settings or options to accomplish this. Many thanks! – Andrew

When you save as a draft (or as Stationery), the document opens in Edit mode automatically. The border will not be visible in Read mode. When the mail is sent, it will open in Read mode.

you can’t replace the boarder of the gif files… if you want to be a visible just compare the background color of the gif to the form you want…

Please wait until you know what you’re talking about before answering questions here – you’ll just create confusion otherwise. The border “problem” here (the hotspot outline and widget handles being visible on the picture – which may only cover a small part of a picture that is being used as an image map) is strictly due to the document being in edit mode when the user views it.

Thank you very much for your responses. Yes, I presumed that the dotted borders would vanish once saved and sent (Read Mode), but unfortunately this is not the case. I’ve tested this by emailing the file several times – and I’ve even replaced the image with a completely unrelated JPG – with the same result: solid hotspot rectangle borders while editing (CTRL-E), light dotted borders once saved and/or emailed.

Is it possible that the file is somehow set to open and remain in edit mode? Is there a way to make sure it remains uneditable once I’ve saved? Many thanks again!

Hmmm… I see that too, testing with a document in 7.0.2. The border goes away completely when the hotspot is added in Designer (on the form). There doesn’t appear to be a way to kill the dotted border given the tools available in the Notes client. Note, though, that the border is displayed because it has default focus – the first link on a document will have focus if there are no preceding focusable elements. If you add a text link before the picture somewhere, it will have focus and the border will not appear until the user clicks on the hotspot rectangle.

Thank you very much, Stan – that was a great insight. I just tried it and it works!

On the down side I don’t have any links or such that should precede the graphic. (The graphic is intended to contain all links.) However I’ve experimented with creating an “invisible” hotspot – something that would satisfy the technical requirement for killing the borders on the rectangle hotspots but that would be invisible to the email recipient. I found I can reduce hotspot text to 1 point, no border, font color “white,” and leave the web address or whatever blank, but that still leaves me with a flashing marker on the final email. Similarly a button offers possibilities but doesn’t quite get there, either.

Do you have anything to add or any recommendations for something less noticeable than my solution?

Thank you again, I really appreciate your assistance.

This is one of those times when the “accessibility” concept is your friend rather than your enemy. You say the image map was intended to contain all links? Well, that could leave you in a spot of trouble; it opens you up to lawsuits, and not just from the visually impaired – just about anybody who doesn’t like clicking on pictures can join in the game.

Create a set of text links that essentially duplicate the image map links. You can format them to make them look like they were intended all along rather than just a solution to a border problem.

Okay, fair point. Not sure if complaints would immediately jump to lawsuits but I certainly don’t want to disadvantage anyone for the sake of aesthetics. Many thanks again for your assistance!
