Home / Mail server in Branch

Hi

I would like to know if there is a way to achieve this:

In my company we have 2 Domino servers in a Cluster for mail and databases and 500 users. Those 2 servers are physically in the same place, and we have 200 users in a branch office and the branch offices are connected each other through MPLS. Now we have the idea to add a third Domino Server in the Cluster, and place it on the branch office. What we want is that those 200 users connect always to the third server no matter what, and only if it fails, the users can connect to the other 2 servers. Is that possible? and how can i do it?

Note: All 500 users are in the same Organizational Unit

Thanks in advance

Try setting that on the servers you don’t want user’s connecting to… Only time they would connect would be if that server was the only one available…

Hello Nicolas!

Technically it is possible, but in fact it makes no sense.
You should restrict the access to Server1 and Server2 setting it properly on Security options of server documents.
But if any fail occurs, you must take a manual action to “remove this restriction”.

By default, the Notes client will always connect on Mail server configured on user’s Location document. But if user have the permission, can open the own database manually on a different server.

I hope it helps!

Once the new server is set up, you can “Move the Mailfile to a new server”. After you have moved the users mail file to a new server, the person document and the users client will be updated to reflect this new server as his home server, and the only time he will try to connect to another server is when failover occurs.

Hi Rodrigo and thanks for your answer.

The problem is that for redundancy purposes, we have a replication at the storage level of the domino servers over a LAN2LAN, and we have high traffic , and thats why we want to put a third server in the branch office (that it is actually our contingency datacenter) to release the high traffic on the LAn2Lan and the replication can be performed over the MPLS (at domino level).

Make a restrictions to the other 2 servers doesn’t like me. I can’t find an scenario of branch offices for domino servers and how they work.

If i configure the Home Mail server in the Location Document to use the third server, you think it will work?

Hi Nicolas!

Setting the Mail Server on Location will “force” Notes client to open the database on this server, but it will not prevent the user to open the database manually on another server.

You will need to check your licensing as I understand you are sometime only allowed two servers in a cluster.

Why not move one of the main servers to the remote location and keep them clustered.
