Help - what are these files?

We have Domino R6 installed in our iSeries (AS/400) server, and in the Notes/Data/ directory of the server, there are a list of files as follows:

  IDB43323.DTF           STMF 

  IDB43429.DTF           STMF 

  IDB44761.DTF           STMF 

  IDB44768.DTF           STMF 

  IDB44966.DTF           STMF 

  IDB45030.DTF           STMF

When I open the file, there are a lot of strange characters inside the file. The problem is that these files keep increasing. Could anyone tell what these files are and is it safe to delete these files?

I called IBM support about these and was told they are temporary files used during index rebuilding. You can delete them, but they recommend you end the server first.

The strange thing is I had gigabytes of these with 6.0 and had to clean them up every couple of days because I would start running out of space. They virtually disappeared in 6.01, then they reappeared with a vengeance in 6.01CF2 and finally disappeared again in 6.02CF1.
