Help: SMTP and/or Router consuming CPU and locking up server

Hi all,

Hope someone can suggest something for me. I have a Windows 2000 SP3 server, with all the lastest fixes/patches. Currently running Domino R6.0.1 CF1.

The problem started yesterday, and I have nothing in the log on either the Event Viewer or the Log.nsf to go by.

Either the SMTP or the Router task is consuming all the CPU. Which ever grabs the resources first, will choke the server.

Here is what I have tried.

  1. Delete and create the mail.box files on the server (I have 2). When I do this, both tasks start fine, but they continue to do so until one of the two tasks ‘bombs’ out. There is no common factor that can be found to determine when it will occur.

  2. Have deleted and recreated the configuraiton document for the server (thinking that it might have been corrupted). When I did do this, I managed to get about 10 hours of service out of the server.

  3. Compacted, fixed up, and updall 'ed all the databases on the server from a command prompt while the server was down. Does not seem to dfix my problems.

Can someone please help me?

I don’t know if this will help at all, but are you running any anti-virus sofware specifically for Domino? if so, could it be causing/contributing to the problem?

This is my only SMTP server, and at this time, with BugBear on the loose, I cannot afford to disable the antivirus software.

Strange thing is , there were no changes made to this server for the last few months, and now it just started.

I am running McAfee GroupShield 5.2.1

Well, after many hours of restarting and monitoring the server, I finally found the cause of the problem. It appears that a mail server outside that was connecting to my SMTP server was the cause of the problem. I do not know why, but I do that it occured everytime the host mail.python.org connected to the server. I blocked the IP for that server on our corporate firewall, and my servers have been fine since then ( the last 3 days).

Definately a strage one…
