Help moving Lotus/Notes/Data - not working!

I want Lotus Notes to store it’s data folder somewhere other than the default.

The default location is:

  • ~/lotus/notes/data

I proceeded to try to customize where the data folder was located via this procedure:

  • copy the data folder at the default location to a new location.

  • from Notes, open File>Preferences and under the ‘Basic Notes Client Configuration’ change the ‘Local application folder’ from default to point at the location where I copied it.

  • Restart Notes again

  • Everything works great, open File>Preferences and double check that the location is set for the new location, not the old (I have also verified this change by looking directly at notes.ini).

  • Exit Notes

  • rename the original data folder to lotus_bk

  • Start Notes… nothing happens and then it tries to walk me through setup again.

  • Exit out of that

  • mv lotus_bk to lotus (returning things to the default status)

  • Start Notes and everything is fine again… including that the Local application folder is still listed as the alternate location.

Is Notes relying on the notes.ini file in my home folder and then living off of the alternate location? How can I get Lotus Notes to operate off of an entirely different location altogether so I don’t need to keep a folder in /home/username/lotus? The same would be if you didn’t want a folder in C:/Program Files/ but wanted it elsewhere…

Best regards,

John
