Subject: Help! Error connecting to server

1.) Have you checked DNS to make sure everything is correct?

2.) Are your clients having issues connecting to the server as well? can you telnet to port 1352

3.) Can you ping the server?

4.) In the domino console, enter the following command: trace serversipaddres

Is the server able to trace to itself?

5.) Is the server behind a firewall? If so, are all the ports domino needs to communicate on open? (i.e. 1352, 80, etc.)

1.) Have you checked DNS to make sure everything is correct?

Yes, DNS settings all seem to be correct.

2.) Are your clients having issues connecting to the server as well? can you telnet to port 1352

Clients connect to the server just fine. Internal email is working, external is not coming through at all.

3.) Can you ping the server? Yes - the server is pingable

4.) In the domino console, enter the following command: trace serversipaddres

Is the server able to trace to itself?

Yes, It completes the trace with no trouble.

5.) Is the server behind a firewall? If so, are all the ports domino needs to communicate on open? (i.e. 1352, 80, etc.)

Yes, we’re behind a firewall, but all necessary ports are open.

Ok…so if all those things are working, my next question is:

What server is reporting the connection errors?

Subject: Narrowing it down…

Ok, it seems that something’s gone awry with our Symantec Mail Security for Domino premium antispam filter. I turned it off, and quit getting that error. Of course, now we have no spam filter…

Subject: Re: Narrowing it down…

Sounds like the anti spam software was blocking the port that smtp communicates on for some reason.

From your previous answers, all communication over port 1352 was ok.

Subject: More SMTP trouble

The persistent error message went away, but I still have a problem. No inbound email is coming through. And, every time someone sends an outbound email, the following message occurs.

No messages transferred to emailadress via SMTP. The server is not responding. The server may be down or you may be experiencing network problems.

But then it says "transferring mail to domain domain via SMTP

followed by

Router: Message transferred to mailbox for recipient from username/domain

Subject: Fixed

Symantec Mail Security for Domino was definitely malfunctioning, and specifically the premium antispam service. I finally got it to shut down, restarted it, and everything is fine now.
