Has anyone managed to use the Smart Upgrade Kit?

I’ve read the help notes, and release notes, and still can’t get this to work !

Has anyone actually managed to get the Smart Upgrade kit for the client working ? No matter what i put in the Source, and Destination versions my clients get the message - There is no smart upgrade kit for user x on server x.

Help !

Try using the string “Release 6.0” in the ‘Source version’ field. You might also want to check out my post below.

Had tried that when i noticed on the server console it listing Opened Session for user x (Release 6.0) - but still no joy.

I have tried the Tools, Notes Smart Upgrade option as well - if only there were some debugging info available ! This is frustrating.

For initial testing I would advise you to only use “Tools->Notes Smart Upgrade” for now.

To get that working you need to

  1. Create a database for your Smart Upgrade Kits

  2. Add a database link for it to the config document of your home server

  3. Wait a few mins until it registers the change

  4. Add a new kit document to the database with the following settings:

Basics

Source version: Release 6.0

Operating system: Windows/32

Localization: English

Destination version: Release 6.0.1

x Restart Notes after upgrade

Data

Location of Upgrade Kit: either ‘attached’ or ‘shared drive’

[Full path to upgrade kit: \someserver\somepath\xxx.exe] (only if using shared drive)

Optional arguments: /S /v/qb+ (for silent install) (THIS DOESN’T SEEM TO WORK ATM!)

Admin notes

Some text. (Don’t leave this empty!)

Administration

Allowed users: */YourOrg

  1. Save and enable the sucker

  2. Set up the ACL of the database for reader access

Now you should be able to use the manual upgrade feature of your notes client (if you’re on the right home server).

Now if I could only get the silent install feature to work…

Martin, thanks for the quick response - it was the allowed users part that was catching me out !!!

I share your sentiments on the help files - actually telling us to use Release xxx would have saved a chunk of work in itself.

I really doubt you’ll get the silent install to work, since it uses an MSI. I’ve not managed it yet with anyone’s products - even with tech support assistance. BUT, as a starting point, unzip the exe file, and grab the msi file that’s inside and try the arguments against it directly. You might have more luck than me

Of course, you may need to get to 6.0.1 to get the options to work !

SPR# HPES5DXJ8C - This fix will pass the optional arguments for any application from Smart Upgrade.

Subject: lol

Just tested it with an upgraded client and there it works as planned.

sigh

Ok, so I’ll roll out the update to our users with “… please press “Next” where apropriate and DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE!”

cya!

Subject: A Better Workaround

A better workaround is to rename the c491vna.exe file to setup.exe and then change the field in the Smart Upgrade document to reflect the new file name. Then Smart Upgrade will properly pass the command line arugment thru.

Subject: Renaming to setup.exe works

Thanks for the tip guys! Client upgrade works as planned now.

best regards

Subject: believe it or not…rename upgrade kit to setup.exe

6.0 Smart Upgrade seems to require that the upgrade kit be named setup.exe to pass it any optional arguments. Rename the upgrade kit you downloaded, update your upgrade kit doc accordingly, and let me know what you see.

Hi.

I have a 6.0.1CF1 server and 6.0.1 clients.

I downloaded “C50HQNA.exe”, renamed in “setup.exe”, puteed on a share directory.

I updated teh required fields in smartupg.nsf, added the “/S /v/qr” options and receive installshield display for allowed parameters.

Any idea ?

Thanx in advance,

Simone

help says arguments are /s /v"qb+"I pasted pdf string to word to be sure.

Only with 6.0.1 starts passing args to any app other than setup.exe

Do you sais pourquoi mes users n’ont pas de propmt d’installation?

Hi

we have started to use IBM Lotus Notes Smart Upgrade for test audience, and it worked very well , you just need to ensure that you have filled this exact string “Release 6.0” in Source Field of your smart upgrade document (without quotes) , additionnaly be sure that you have pasted a doclink into your home mail server configuration document and that your Home mail server server run both Domino 6 with Domino directory 6 design
