Hardware Platform

Has anyone had any reliability problems with XSeries servers? Our main Domino servers are now on ISeries, but because of platform consolidations, we will likely be moving them to the Windows platform.

We have about 50 XSeries servers for vaious things and are having terrible problems with hard drive failures and raid controller failures. I am worried about moving from something as stable as the ISeries to a platform that is having so many failures.

Don’t do it! But, if you’ve got to run Windows, what about using Wintel server cards in the ISeries boxes. You get the stability, managability and drives of the ISeries and still have Domino on Windows OS.

I agree - don’t do it. Has anyone at your organization considered porting the windows apps to run on the iSeries hardware?

You’ll get better stability, managabililty, security and reliability.

And you can back it all up with one command.

Not to mention you won’t need as many people to admin the x stuff, and the lower cost for electricity and smaller hardware footprints.

We have four xSeries 306’s and have been having problems with drives and RAID cards, too. I think all of them have had one or the other – or both – replaced in the past year.

I’ll steer clear of the iSeries discussion. Let’s just say I’m not a fan.
