Happy Pi Day!

Today is Pi Day, because it is 3.14 (March 14). Now, before you international people complain and say it is 14.3 where you are, hold on a minute. If you persist in that logic, you won’t get a true Pi day until Jan 3., 2041 (3/1/41), whereas if you adopt our system for just this day, you get a Pi day every year, and a mega-Pi day in just a few years (3/14/15).What do you do on Pi day? Make or buy and eat pie, the more the better. My daughter made two pies for school yesterday, and my son and I are making an apple pie today (he has the day off). I hope you are all prepared, but even if you are not, you can run to the store now and buy some pi (errr… pie) and celebrate with the rest of us!

Ben… you are SUCH a geek!

Happy Pi Day.

Subject: What is really scary is…

I memorized Pi to 34 places when I was twelve years old, and I can still recite it:

3.1415926535897932384626433

Useful, eh? Well, my son knows it to 34 places and he just placed 26th in the state of Ohio in our MathCounts competition, so I guess geekiness runs in the family. Along with a love of both pi and pie.

e’s easy – it looks like it’s going to repeat early on in the proceedings (2.7182818…), so you just say, “and so on” if anyone asks; but if the people around you start to talk about packing n-dimensional “spheres” into n-dimensional “cubes”, run like a scalded cat for the nearest exit.

And for the record: the best way to find the included volume of a rotated sinusoid with a hyperbolic decay and parabolic offset relative to the x-y plane is to carve one out on a lathe and fill it with water, then dump the contents into a measuring cup.

Subject: LOL. Now that was funny.

Subject: You’re making me feel old Ben…

i know most people think i’m a mere pup, but i was an Ohio MathCounts alternate in 1988.

i think i’ll postpone my Pi day celebration until Monday, when i plan on finding some green beer and eggs in one of our many local taverns (the Harp perhaps?)

Take care,

brandt

Thanks!

The homemade chocolate cheesecake, while not technically a pie, was delicious. Yes, we celebrated it here at my office.

Subject: *OK. I admit that we too had chocalate chip cheese cake as pie (as well as key lime pie)

Subject: What I do on PI Day? Same as every year, celebrate my birthday

Subject: *Congratulations. Have yourself a Birthday Pie!
