Grrrr Roaming

Hi all,

could one of you please tell me where I am going wrong. Just trying to get the Notes client roaming feature working, and the documentation, or lack of it, is driving me nuts.

Anyway, I got this working in a 6.5.x test environment a while back and I remeber that if you where a new user to the PC that you wanted to roam to, when you where presented with the password dialog box you would have to press escape and then confirm you where a roaming user and fill in your server details.

Now I am trying to get this to work in 7. The client install is a multi user. When prompted with a users password, I press escape but I do not get the option to say I am a roaming user, just 4 options, one being switch id. If I switch id then the roaming details gets replicated down. I hope that this is not the only way to get roaming to work in 7. Can any of you please tell me where I am going wrong.

Thanking you in advance

Carl.

Hey Carl,

I have been using my own version of roaming Notes users since R5. Note quite sure how the official Notes version works, but from what I have seen of it I do not like it. It seems to use the profile directory to store its data.

Essentially I have all Notes users with their own data drive on a network share. This way where ever the logon they have access to their Lotus Notes.

I can go into more details, but not sure if this is what you want or how Notes does its roaming users.

At one time, the holding of data directories on network drives was not supported by IBM / Lotus (except, for some reason, for Citrix users). I don’t know whether or not this is still the case.

It’s still the case (which is coincidentally one of the reasons we abandoned it.)

We’ve been trying to get the new 7.0.2 USB drive install working here and the person I have been working with at IBM told me in no uncertain terms that the network drive set up is not supported.

Not really sure what you mean by this. Do you know what time this was not supported?

I have been using this method on the past few jobs, for the past decade, on PCs, Citrix and Terminal Server without a problem.

But it is not using any Lotus Notes supported method. Just making a network share and editing the ini file to look at a different location for the notes\data drive

I didn’t say it doesn’t work (we use it for some of our users), I said it isn’t supported (which means that if you have a problem IBM may ask you to replicate the problem on a standard set-up before they will attempt to fix the problem)

OK, if your data directory is on a network share, then this is not a supported configuration.

Now to get this topic back on track, as anyone out there got a Notes 7 client working with the IBM/Lotus method of roaming. If so can you please tell me what steps you wnet through and what can the end user expect to see if they go up to a pc and use Notes for the first time.

Regards

Carl.
