Groupshield 5.2.1: some issues, can anyone confirm?

Hi all.

I’m running McAfee GroupShield 5.2.1 over a Domino 6.0.1CF1 server.

I have some problems and I really think they are related to Groupshield software:

  1. Memory consumption: when the server start I have 300Mb RAM occupied, but after only 2 hours they are 700Mb. Disabling the GSD* tasks seem to solve.

  2. Read/Unread marks: sometimes a black mail read in the past hours become again red.

  3. Mails stuck in mail?.box dbs: some mail are not delivered to the final recipient and are in dead status in the mail?.box databases. The dead reason is “NAI - Await for virus scanning”. Stopping GSD* tasks and releasing the dead messages trought the Administration client fix the problem.

Anyone experience this too ? Can somebody confirm/deny this problems ?

Thanx in advance,

Simone

Subject: Groupshield 5.2.1: some issues, can anyone confirm ?

Hi Simone

I am in charge of development of McAfee GroupShield for Lotus Domino. We are not aware of any problems in these areas.

  1. Memory consumption

Try minimising the server console window then restoring it. This will probably result in the memory consumption dropping back to the original level. If it does, the apparent increase in memory usage you are seeing is due to the way Windows handles garbage collection. Basically what is happening is that GroupShield is releasing memory it has used but Windows doesn’t mark it as free until either it needs some more memory or it is forced to do so (e.g. by minimising and restoring the Window). If minimising and restoring the server console doesn’t resolve this problem, please raise this with McAfee support.

  1. Read/Unread marks

Does this still happen when you disable GroupShield? The only way I can imagine this happening is if you have an On Demand scan of your user mailboxes using different settings to your Mail scan. In this case the notes could be altered by the On Demand scanner.

  1. Dead mail

With this release we have applied fixes to all known causes of dead mail as far as possible. There are a couple of issues that cannot be fixed in software (e.g. corruption of GroupShield configuration documents). Our Support people are aware of these issues and how to deal with them. Try contacting Support (I assume you have a support contract?). If they are unable to resolve the issue, make sure it gets escalated so that we can have a look at it.

Peter

Subject: RE: Groupshield 5.2.1: some issues, can anyone confirm ?

Hi Peter,

happy to have a so significant people from development writing about GSD.

First of all, I obviously have a valid grant number for GSD.

For the point 1) I will investigate more.

About point 2) I’m quite sure about because Lotus support told me there is no way to reproduce the read/unread marks problem with R6 on W2k, so it MUST be a 3rd party product problem. I have only Domino R6.0.1CF1, Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 and GSD 5.2.1. Removing the Backup Exec doesn’t help. Other IT manager and IT consultant here have problem only on those customer using McAfee/NAI products, no issues with TrendMicro or Symantec users. So I’m going to install a second Domino server only to make a Antivirus scanning and then pass all the emails trought SMTP to the real production server in order to see if the problem is really GSD as I and Amsterdam NAI support suppose ( case #2495951).

Point 3) is solved using 4269 or newer dat files as in the past was happened :frowning:

I’m going to take this opportunity to discuss with you about two other problem of GSD.

The first one is that on some alerts I can’t use the %FILENAME% variable to personalize the message given to senders/recipients because if always put in the message “[Non File]”. Support told me that the new version ( I was running 5.0a ) would have this fixed. I’m running 5.2.1 and still have this issue (case #2494306).

The last one, but the most important of all, is related to the way GSD handle some attachments. I don’t want to give here details but I hope you can contact me at simone.chemelli@serinf.it or at the phone you can have locating my in your customer db ( case #2485695).

Best regards,

Simone

Subject: Groupshield 5.2.1: No problems here…

Hello -I have supported GroupShield for Domino 5.21 for quite some time on R6. We do not have any issues to mention.

However, regarding the issue with the unread marks, etc., there have been documents in the past that discuss issues with read/unread marks in the “Sent” view.

Do you have a Cluster? If so, the unread status may be due to the users switching over to the other cluster member (just an idea for you…)

When all else fails, remove and reload groupshield as a clean install. We are now using it with 6.02 CF2 and still, no issues to mention.

Cheers.

This is still the same issue as before!!Get a real anti-virus product for Lotus Domino!

Go to http://www/trendmicro.co and look for ScanMail for Lotus Notes. I use this product on different platforms like Linux, Windows, etc…

No problems at all!!
