While trying to troubleshoot a problem with access levels I was looking at the $Groups view. Should it be populated with all the groups in the Directory? I have about 200 groups and there are only about 20 groups listed in $Groups. Haven’t been able to find any information on what it is for.
Subject: $Groups - should all groups be in there?
This hidden view is used for lookups by various pieces of code in Notes and Domino. The selection formula shows this:
SELECT (Type = “Group” & (GroupType = “2”:“3”:“4”)) & Form=“Group” & @IsUnavailable($Conflict)
and the field properties for group type tell you that these types groups correspond to the following numbers:
Access Control List only|2
Servers only|4
Deny List only|3
so only these types will be shown in that view. The groups NOT shown are
Multi-purpose|0
Mail only|1
Which is probably what you have the most of. Those groups are shown in several hidden views - most are named. $PeopleGroupxxxxxx. I like using Designer to deconstruct things like this.
views with ($) in the name are hidden, and used by other parts of the product.

Thank you for the detailed response. You helped me understand that view much better. I suspected that there were only some groups based on what type but I never thought to dig that deeply.
