We will be getting Blackberries and will be receiving the Blackberry Professional Software.

That’s pretty vague, but assuming you’re going to be running a Blackberry Enterprise Server, take the opportunity to setup some policies and lock down your devices (e.g. require automatic device locking and password, prohibit installation of 3rd party software, etc.) “out of the box.” It’s a lot easier to do this kind of thing at the onset rather than “taking the candy away from the kids” (the users) at a later date. These options help make your devices secure and often need to be mandated.
You may want to keep the Blackberry Desktop software under IT’s control. Check out its functionality and decide from there.
