IBM Connect 2017 #3: I’ve Seen The Future of Domino and it is Sapho – The Domino Elf http://domino.elfworld.org/ibm-connect-2017-3-i-ve-seen-the-future-of-domino-and-it-is-sapho/

I just read this link and noticed about half way down the following statements under other news:

No more Domino for iSeries

What exactly does this mean since my IBM rep at the end of the year put a real hard sell on me to move my in house Domino email system to IBM Verse in the cloud. When I ask why he said there would be big

announcements about Domino at connections 2017 in February. This is the first I have heard this anybody have any info.

Subject: Read through a bit of “Designer going away”

… and without looking at it’s multi$k replacement, I wonder what they’re thinking.

Designer has some quirks. Plus, I’ve had to write version backup programs and custom design update programs to get around a few things. Been doing that a lot.

What Designer does do, is get things in your view that’re important. So far I’ve not seen an eclipse setup that does as well.

And … I reiterate, IBM doesn’t appear to recognize the flexible data & execution model that’s in Domino, and nowhere else.

If IBM had a product to jump to, I’d know by now. I’ve been looking for 15 years:

  • Developer-accessible & extensible views (not dba).
  • Standard-feature profiling: you can even profile validation rules (formula – and to some extent BASIC), which makes the app extremely flexible in different surroundings.
  • Mixed-record, extensible database that can replicate as a unit.
  • Standard Security model.
  • Integration with existing databases, Java servers.
  • Personal customization. Yes, I mean Notes. Web browsers suck for automating and optimizing a user’s job.
If I’d told 'em to wake me when they find all this, I’d be Rip van Winkle.

Subject: Thanks, Barry!

That is better news!

Subject: No more Domino for iSeries?

I have an entire iSeries dedicated to being a Domino web server - dropping support for the iSeries seems like the final nail in that coffin…

Subject: IBM I still supported

That information was not presented at my session at Connect. I have requested that be removed. To be clear IBM I is, and will be supported on Domino through the current code stream’s life cycle.
