I think this is a very odd problem, but maybe someone has some ideas. If you have any insights at all, please share them with me - I’m baffled and a little frustrated.
When I am connected to the Internet via a particular ISP (Cox cable modem in northern Virginia), Every time I try to send a mail message through Notes, it fails looking for the Domino server to perform address validation. It will eventually give an error about “Server not responding” or I can hit ctrl-break and cancel this attempt quickly. In either case, if I click on Send again, it always goes through without a hitch.
I don’t have this problem over any other Internet connection, just from this one ISP.
What could my Internet connection do that could cause such odd behavior? Any suggestions how to avoid this problem? Although my work-around works (press ctrl-break and resend), that’s obviously annoying and extra steps that shouldn’t be needed. I don’t mind making a new location document for sending from this location.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Are you sending the mail to a domino server on a WAN? Or are you using your Lotus Notes client as a POP3/SMTP client with your ISP’s mail server?

All communication is between a Notes Client and a Domino Server. Both are 6.5.1.
Failure is always on the address check part of sending. If I turned off “Local and Server” for mail addressing, it wouldn’t be a problem. However, I have found other problems occur when I disable that, even if I have a local replica of the main address book (can’t recall what, but something with scheduling or assigning tasks I think).
That’s why I keep coming back to - why does this only happen over this 1 ISP connection? So strange.
Any ideas?

To make sure I am understanding things… The problem is with the client or the domino server? I was trying to have some clarification.
If you are only having your notes client talk to the domino server, do you have the same problem if you are only e-mail another user on the same domino server?

I’m not sure I follow your question. If you are asking if the problem happens when I am only e-mailing another account on the Domino server, then yes. It’s the act of contacting the server for address validation that fails, which Notes does regardless of whether or not the recipients are on the server or not. So it happens on every e-mail, whether it’s to another local Domino account or an external Internet e-mail account.

Ok – I am understanding now.
Do you have connectivity issues on anything else with the server (non-mail functions) like opening a database on the server, etc. Do you use connection documents within your local address book?

I think I do. I think I have regular problems connecting to the server, but they always go away if I try a second time. I’ll double check this next time I’m at that location. I think that will be later today.
Anything else I should try while I’m there?

Hi Colin,
I can’t recall the problem I had, neighter the solution. But It was a problem with some users trying to connect from home using VPN, and ISDN link. Other people using same configuration but CABLE link had no problem.
Our network people found a solution, modifying MTU parameters. I don’t know what this means, but it’s something related to packet sizes.
I hope this can give some directions…
