Field shows null but has a ""

when I export to a comma delimited text file. I ran an Export to Excel view action…that works…but puts a “” in null fields. But the quotes doesnt show in Notes or Excel. But when you export it to a text file, field values show up in between " " or if the field is null, it has a “”. How can I go back and get the " " out of my Notes fields in the database?

Subject: Field shows null but has a “”

“” represents a NULL text value in Lotus Notes

from help:

Null fields

A null field is equivalent to the text constant “” (empty quotation marks). The following example tests the field named Subject in the current document. If the value of Subject is null, it is reset to “No Subject.” Otherwise, its value does not change.

Thanks, this is the first time I’m seeing this when I export. It took the file from 2 megs to 9 megs. Is this something that could an export to excel action could “turn on?” or something

Like Paul said, “” empty quotes are the notes representation for a null value in a text database field. The empty quotes don’t show up in notes or excel because both programs realize that quotations mark a field as text rather than numeric or actionable. A simple txt file however, just displays whatever is in the file.If you want to remove the empty quotes from a text file. I would suggest opening the file with a streamreader/writer then searching the document form “” and removing them.
